Shikumen Residences

Shikumen is famous style of residential residence in Shanghai. The old alleys in Shanghai are generally Shikumen buildings. This kind of building absorbs the style of the houses in southern China and Western countries and date back to the 1870’s. Shikumen in Shanghai is mainly concentrated in Huangpu District and Jing’an District.

Lane 96 of Shaoxing Road, is one of the most well-preserved Shikumen areas in Shanghai. Many movie and TV dramas that represent the old Shanghai theme like to come here for authentic shooting.

There is a concentration of these buildings in the Tianzifang and Xintiandi area which are still lived in today. If you want to explore the inner features and layout pay a visit to Shikumen Residence Museum (屋里厢-石库门博物馆) at No. 25, Lane 181, Taicang Road, Luwan District and/or Shikumen Residence Household Museum (open only on Sat & Sun) at No. 35, Lane 38, Yongkang Road, Xuhui District.
